Sprint announces HPUE network technology to boost its 2.5GHz coverage

Sprint HPUE announcement

Sprint today announced the latest technology that it’ll deploy to improve its cellular network, called High Performance User Equipment, or HPUE.

With HPUE, Sprint says that it can expand the coverage of its 2.5GHz LTE coverage by up to 30 percent, including indoor coverage. That helps Sprint’s 2.5GHz spectrum to better match the coverage of its 1.9GHz spectrum while offering the benefits that the higher-band 2.5GHz coverage offers, like faster speeds.

Sprint expects HPUE to appear in postpaid devices starting in 2017, including new devices from Samsung, LG, HTC, and Moto. It’s expected that all of Sprint’s new devices will have HPUE support within the next two years.

Sprint’s been working to make major improvements to its network lately, like with its LTE Plus tech that combines 800MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz coverage to offer improved coverage and speeds. Now Sprint is promising to beef up its coverage even more with HPUE, but we’ll have to wait until the first HPUE-supported devices hit next year before we can see if the new technology is really making a difference. In the meantime, Sprint customers have something to look forward to in 2017.
