It’s official: Google is getting into the Android Wear game.
Google confirmed today that it plans to launch two flagship Android Wear smartwatches in the first quarter of 2017. Details of the devices are light, but Google did confirm that they’ll be the first devices to run Android Wear 2.0 and that they’ll include support for Android Pay.
These watches won’t be Pixel-branded. Instead, they’ll be branded by the company that’s making them. Google is collaborating with this company on the hardware design and software integration of the watches, so think of them like Nexus-style devices.
Also, Google won’t reveal which company it partnered with on the watches, but it did say that this company has made Android Wear smartwatches in the past.
We’ve heard rumors that Google is prepping two Android Wear smartwatches, but this is the first confirmation of those leaks. This is big for Android Wear, as it means that Google will try to help give the platform a shot in the arm by collaborating with a company on a pair of Nexus-style smartwatches. There will likely be a lot of Android fans that’ll give these new watches a look just because Google is involved with them.
In other Android Wear news, Google today confirmed that a fifth Android Wear 2.0 beta will roll out in January with support for Google Assistant and Android Pay (on supported devices) as well as iOS support.
Finally, Google says that its Android Wear partners will launch new watches throughout 2017. Announcements are expected at CES 2017 in January and Baselworld in March.
