At the tail-end of October, it was revealed that Vine would be killed off by Twitter. Fast-forward to the middle of December, though, and the situation isn’t quite as bleak as it was before.
Vine has announced that in January, it’ll be updating the Vine app to become Vine Camera, a “pared-down” version of its previous app. The new Vine Camera app will still let you record six-second looping videos, and you’ll be able to post them to Twitter or save them to your device.
Vine also plans to make it easy for you to alert your Vine followers to move to your Twitter account.
Finally, Vine will let you download all of your Vines, both through the app and through the Vine.co website. That site will continue to host an archive of all of your existing videos so that you can view them in the future.
Vine had a decent run, living for nearly four years. Twitter hasn’t said why Vine is being shut down, but the good news is that those folks that really love Vine’s six-second looping videos will continue to be able to create them using the Vine Camera app and then easily share them on Twitter. With this news, the end of Vine doesn’t seem as bad as it did back in October.
