Samsung confirms new Gear VR headset coming, augmented reality device also in the works

Samsung Gear VR hands-on

Samsung has been a major proponent of virtual reality lately with its Gear VR headsets, and that won’t be changing anytime soon.

Dr. Sung-Hoon Hong, VP of Samsung Electronics, has confirmed that Samsung is working on a new Gear VR headset. Hong didn’t spill any details about the new wearable, but he did say that it “will be presented in a short time.”

Hong also teased that Samsung is prepping an augmented reality headset. “My team is developing a light field engine,” the exec said, adding that “Samsung’s hologram technology is really, really realistic.”

Samsung expects to show its augmented reality tech at Mobile World Congress 2017, which takes place from February 27 to March 2.

While virtual reality headsets are a big deal right now, there are also some companies exploring augmented reality. Microsoft has its HoloLens headset, Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed interest in AR several times, and now apparently Samsung is building some AR tech of its own.

Samsung envisions is AR offering a virtual assistant that can help you get things done, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of AR device Samsung can cook up. The good news is that with MWC just months away, we won’t have to wait long to find out.
