Google Maps update bringing Material Design and more to Android, iOS [UPDATED]

Google Maps Material Design update Android iPhone

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Google has announced a new version of one of its apps, complete with a Material Design user interface. Yep, Google has been Material Design-ifying many of its apps recently, and the latest one to get a makeover is Google Maps.

Google today revealed its new version of Google Maps for Android and iPhone. The app features “bold colors and textures” and a flat design that’s reminiscent of Android 5.0 and Google’s new Material Design language. There are layers, new animations and more.

In addition to its new look, this Google Maps has some nifty features up its sleeve. Those include an info layer and Explore option for finding places to go, the ability to reserve a table at a restaurant using OpenTable (U.S. only) and estimates for Uber pickup time and pricing, so long as you have the Uber app installed on your device.

Google says that this updated version of Google Maps will roll out to Android and iPhone “over the next few days.” As with Google’s other Material Design app updates, this new Maps looks pretty great, and it’s awesome that both the Android and iPhone apps are rolling out at the same time.

UPDATE: Google Maps has also gotten a new, Material Design app icon that you can check out below.
