Today Apple officially released its WatchKit software development kit, and along with it came some new details about the Apple Watch and the software that it’ll run.
First up, it's been revealed that the two different sizes of the Apple Watch will have different screen resolutions. The smaller, 38mm watch will have a resolution of 272x420, while the 42mm model will be 312x390.
When it comes to notifications, Apple Watch apps will have Short Look and Long Look alerts. Short Look notifications will display just an app icon and a tiny piece of information, but tapping on a Short Look will switch you to a Long Look that’ll have additional content, actions that you can take and a button to dismiss the notification.
Finally, Apple’s WatchKit SDK explains that while an app is being displayed on the Apple Watch, all of the actually processing will be carried out by the iPhone that it’s connected to. When you interact with an app on the Apple Watch, the iPhone will quietly run that app’s WatchKit extension.
Obviously there are still a lot of details to be revealed, and we’ll have to wait until early next year when the Apple Watch is actually released to see how developers will use the wearable and WatchKit. The good news is that Apple has given developers a lot of lead time by releasing the WatchKit SDK today.
