Apparently this is the week for Nokians and ex-Nokians to introduce new tablet hardware, because just a day after the Nokia N1 made its debut, the folks at Jolla have announced their own new tablet.
The Jolla Tablet is now officially official, and the company is taking a unique method to creating and selling the device. The device is being sold on Indiegogo, where it reached its $380,000 goal in just two hours and is at $524,833 as of this writing.
Jolla is also taking suggestions on what features consumers would like to see included with the Jolla Tablet. Users can suggest features in Jolla’s community forum, then they can vote on which ideas they’d like to see go further. Those ideas will then be prioritized by the Jolla Sailors development team.
When it comes to raw specs, the Jolla Tablet features a 7.85-inch 2048x1536 display, 64-bit 1.8GHz quad-core Intel processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a 4300mAh battery. The slate also includes a 5-megapixel camera on its rear and a 2-megapixel shooter on its face, and its body measures 203mm x 137mm x 8.3mm and weighs 384g.
The Jolla Tablet will run Sailfish 2.0, the new version of Jolla’s MeeGo-based mobile operating system. Sailfish includes features like Ambiences for personalizing the Sailfish OS and an Events section that shows your messages, calendar events, missed calls and more in a single view. Additionally, Sailfish OS can run Android apps after downloading them through the Jolla Store and “other Android app marketplaces.”
The Jolla Tablet will be available in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, United States, India, China, Hong Kong and Russia during the Indiegogo campaign. The initial two Jolla Tablet batches were priced at $189 and $199 plus $20 shipping, but they’ve since sold out. The Jolla Tablet is currently available for $204, and Jolla says that if the device is released after the campaign, it’ll be price at $249.
As for when the Jolla Tablet will ship, Jolla says that it’s aiming to send out the first units in May 2015. The Indiegogo campaign will run through December 9.
The Jolla Tablet looks like a nicely-designed piece of mobile hardware, and it sounds like Jolla has made some improvements to its swipe-based Sailfish OS. The Indiegogo campaign and community voting are unique ways to create a tablet, and it’ll definitely be interesting to see what features end up making it into the final shipping Jolla Tablet. Unfortunately, we’ve got to wait until May 2015 to figure that out.
