Google app shown off with Material Design makeover, new features

Google Search app Material Design Now

This is a big day for Google and Android. The Nexus 6 went back on sale, Android 5.0 is now rolling out as an update and the Google Keyboard got a Material Design refresh. Google’s not quite done yet, though, as it’s also announced a big update for the Google Search app.

Google today showed off a new version of the Google app that includes a Material Design makeover, which brings it in line with Android 5.0. The app looks similar to that Material Design-ified version of Google Now that leaked out last month, complete with a floating hamburger button.

Google says that this update also includes better-looking cards, reminders for events that you’ve forgotten about as well as upcoming trips and to-do lists, the ability to search inside of other apps and the ability to flip a coin, for when you’re feeling indecisive. Finally, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Galaxy Note 4 owners will be able to use the “Ok Google” hot word even if their phone is off and unplugged.

This update isn’t showing up quite yet in the Google Play store or App Store, but now that Google has officially announced it, I’m sure that it isn’t too far off. It’s awesome to see Google continue to update its core Android apps with Lollipop looks, especially for those folks that haven’t yet updated — or won’t be updated — to Android 5.0 itself.
