Vivo to have first smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor

Vivo smartphone in-display fingerprint sensor official

Earlier this week, Synaptics teased that it was working with a "top five OEM" on mass production of an in-display fingerprint sensor for smartphones. Now the identity of that OEM has been revealed.

Vivo will release the first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint reader. The exact device hasn't been named, but we do know that the in-display fingerprint sensor is a Clear ID FS9500.

So how does it work? Forbes' Patrick Moorhead got to use a pre-production Vivo smartphone with the in-display fingerprint sensor and says that it was "fast and simple." When the phone was woken from sleep, a fingerprint image appeared at the bottom of the screen. After touching it, the phone was unlocked.

The in-display fingerprint reader will activate only when needed, helping to conserve battery life.

With the rise of smartphone displays that have very thin bezels, some manufacturers have been looking for different places to put a fingerprint reader since there's no room below the display. Some opt for the side of the phone, some opt for the back, and some switch to a different security feature altogether. An in-display fingerprint sensor gives them another option, letting the OEM hide the sensor in the display and giving the device a cleaner design.
