Amazon buys connected security camera company Blink

Blink connected home security cameras

Earlier this year, Amazon introduced its Amazon Key system that includes a connected security camera and smart lock to let Amazon delivery drivers drop packages off into your home. Now Amazon appears to be getting further invested in smart home security.

Amazon has acquired Blink. Blink confirmed the news on its website today, saying that it's their team's first day at Amazon. The company adds that for now, its smart home security cameras will continue to work as normal.

Blink sells smart security cameras. There's an outdoor camera that sells for $129.99 and offers HD video, motion detection, instant alerts, and a live view. It also offers two years of battery life with just two AA batteries. Blink also offers an indoor version of its security camera for $99 and planned to sell a video doorbell for $99 in 2018.

It's unclear exactly what Amazon has planned for the Blink team, but it certainly looks like the online mega retailer wants to beef up its connected home security efforts. With its experience selling connected home security cameras, especially affordable models that are weatherproof and run on AA batteries, Blink could help Amazon to become a major competitor in the home security space.
