Amazon Prime Video app for Android TV released

Amazon Prime Video Android TV app

Earlier this month, the Amazon Prime Video app finally launched on the Apple TV after it was promised back in June that the app was coming. Now Amazon Prime Video has made its way to another major set-top box platform.

Amazon Prime Video has launched on Android TV. The Prime Video app is now live in the Play Store, letting you stream Amazon's Prime Video library on your Android-powered set-top box.

Interestingly, the Prime Video app doesn't appear to be compatible with most Android TV boxes out there. The folks at Android Police were unable to install it on Google ADT-1, Nexus Player, or other device. It's possible that Amazon just hasn't updated the app's compatibility on the Play Store, so we'll have to wait and see if that changes.

Amazon Prime Video has actually been available on select Android TV devices like the NVIDIA Shield TV, but it hasn't been available for everyone on the Play Store. That changes today, and the move could be part of an effort from Amazon to convince Google to leave YouTube on the Echo Show and Fire TV. Google pulled YouTube from the Echo Show this month and has threatened to take it from the Fire TV in January, but perhaps now Google will reverse its decision.
