There have been three new Nokia-branded Android phones announce this year, and now the company behind them has confirmed that they’ll be updated to the next major Android release.
HMD Global says that the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 will be updated to Android O. An HMD spokesperson recently told TechRadar that “the smartphones will get the Android O update once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners, the same way HMD Global is committed to the monthly Android security updates.”
It’s unclear when HMD Global will release Android O for the Nokia 6, 5, and 3, largely because Google hasn’t actually released Android O to the public yet. Google has said that the Android O public release will be available to OEMs in Q3 2017, so that’s when HMD will get the update and be able to prepare it for its Nokia phones.
The Nokia 6, 5, and 3 are relatively new devices, with the Nokia 5 and 3 only having debuted at the end of February. So it’s not terribly surprising that HMD is planning to update all three phones to Android O, but it’s still good to get confirmation that those updates are coming, especially for folks that may be on the fence about buying the new Nokia devices.
