On the same day that Amazon is hosting a major Echo sale, it’s been revealed that a new feature will be rolling out to Echo devices shortly.
Amazon is adding intercom functionality to its Echo devices. This means that if you’ve got multiple Echo devices or the Alexa app installed on your smartphone, you can quickly speak to someone in another room in your house.
To enable the feature, you’ll need to name your Echo devices by room and enable the Drop In feature in the Alexa app.
Amazon says that this intercom functionality will roll out over the next few days.
The concept of having an intercom feature in 2017 might sound kind of strange, but it could actually be handy if you’ve got multiple Echo devices strewn throughout your home. With it, you can simply talk to other people in your house no matter where they are, so long as there’s an Echo nearby. That means no shouting or pulling out your phone to launch a messaging app.
