Will a new color revitalize Samsung Galaxy S7 sales?

Samsung Galaxy S7

This year, Samsung launched three impressive smartphones. Starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the early stages of 2016, and then, more recently, followed up with the Galaxy Note 7. Each device was praised for the engineering, and the software therein. Samsung has hits on its hands this year.

But then the fate of the Galaxy Note 7 was sealed with fiery incidents all across the globe. The flagship for late-2016 was recalled twice, and now Samsung is simply treading water as it waits to launch the feature-packed Galaxy S8 sometime in the early part of 2017.

Rumors suggest that Samsung is going to wait a bit longer to get the Galaxy S8 into potential owners' hands, too. Whether that's to double check engineering, as it certainly aims to avoid any potential catastrophes next year, or if it's finalizing features isn't known right now, but it's likely a combination of the two scenarios.

Samsung should launch the Galaxy S8 when it feels ready. If that means we have to wait an additional month when compared to previous launches, so be it. But rumors also suggest Samsung may be facing an increasing amount of impatience.

It started with an unfounded rumor that suggested Samsung executives were considering releasing the Galaxy Note 7 again, this time as refurbished units sometime in early 2017. That simply sounds ridiculous, and I struggle to believe that can actually happen. At least I hope it doesn't.

And now there's a new rumor circulating that next month, December, nine months after Samsung initially launched the Galaxy S7, the manufacturer may launch a new variant of the Galaxy S7 -- just with a different color scheme. Supposedly Samsung's planning on launching a "Jet Black" variant of the Galaxy S7 next month, something to help revive Galaxy S7 sales.

It doesn't seem impossible, especially considering Samsung launched a Blue Coral variant of the Galaxy S7 edge this month, a device that's just as old as the standard Galaxy S7. But I have to wonder: Will it make any difference whatsoever?

First off, Samsung already has a pretty glossy black variant of the Galaxy S7 available to buy right now, so what does a "Jet Black" Galaxy S7 even look like? Is it the opposite of Apple's "Jet Black" variant? Samsung's interpretation of the color will be a matte black? That would certainly be strange.

Second, and this is pretty closely related to the first, but if someone hasn't already picked up a Galaxy S7 that was perfectly capable of doing so, and opted to go with something else, how on earth is a new color option supposed to be a viable reason to consider the nine-month-old phone?

At this point, I can understand why Samsung feels the need to revive interest in its smartphones. With the Galaxy Note 7 out and what appears to be a few more months before a new flagship arrives on the market, the Galaxy S7 --and Galaxy S7 edge-- are left to pull up the slack. I would imagine a price decrease would do better to sway a potential buyer, though, and not just a different color. Maybe both?

Anyway, what do you think of the rumor that Samsung plans on launching a Jet Black Galaxy S7 next month? Will it make a bit of difference? Let me know!
