US Supreme Court sides with Samsung in patent fight with Apple

One year ago, Samsung filed an appeal with the US Supreme Court regarding its legal battle with Apple. Now the results of that appeal have come in.

The US Supreme Court sided with Samsung in the company’s appeal, ruling 8-0 in Samsung’s favor and sending the case back to the lower court. This decision gives Samsung the opportunity to get back $399 million that the company had been ordered to pay Apple.

In its appeal, Samsung argued that the amount that it must pay Apple for damages shouldn’t be calculated based on the entire profit it made from its smartphones, but rather only part of its profits since only part of its infringing design copied Apple. The Supreme Court agreed, ruling that the damages could be calculated this way.

This battle isn’t over quite yet, as the lower courts will now figure out where to go from here. This decision is still a notable one for Samsung, though, as it means that the company may not have to pony up nearly as much money to Apple for the previous ruling that said that Samsung infringed on Apple’s patents.
