Twitter says it will soon make it easy for you to switch to a chronological feed

Twitter app Galaxy Note 9

Back in 2016, Twitter officially switched to an algorithmic timeline that aims to show tweets that the service thinks you're most likely to care about first. Some users have been pretty vocal in their distaste for that feature in the two years since, and today Twitter has some exciting news for them.

Twitter today updated its "Show the best tweets first" setting so that when it's disabled, you'll only see tweets from people that you follow in reverse chronological order. Previously, disabling "Show the best tweets first" would still show you an "In case you missed it" section of tweets and recommended tweets from people you don't follow.

Meanwhile, Twitter says that it's working on an easily accessible way for you to switch between "a timeline of tweets that are most relevant to you and a timeline of the latest tweets." This test will be available in the coming weeks, and eventually it will replace the "Show the best tweets first" setting.

This is big news for Twitter users who aren't fans of the algorithmic timeline and just want a reverse chronological feed of tweets from people that they follow. Twitter has been the target of some frustration from its power users lately, as the company ditched APIs that made third-party apps useful, like push notifications and the ability to auto-refresh the timeline. While this new change probably won't be enough to please all of the people upset about that move, it is a welcome change for Twitter.
