Google today announced a major update to the feed found in its mobile app.
Google is giving the feed a new name, Discover, along with an updated design. This includes new topic headers to help you understand why you're seeing the news story in your Discover feed as well as a Discover icon that'll let you see more about a topic and start to follow it to see more in your Discover feed in the future.
New content is coming to Discover, too. Google says that it's bringing more videos and fresh visual content, which should help to give the feed a more modern feel. Evergreen content that includes articles and videos that aren't new to the web, but are new to you will start appearing more in Discover, too.
Google Discover also includes features to help you control what you see in the feed. A control icon in the lower right corner of cards will let you control whether you see more or less on a specific topic. Discover will also remember if you have a language preference for specific interests — maybe you like to read recipes in Spanish but read news in English — and show you content that fits those preferences.
Finally, Google is bringing the Discover feed to the mobile google.com homepage. This feature will roll out over the next few weeks and will help you stay up-to-date on news from around the web, helping to keep you informed in the same place that you perform searches.
This is a significant update to Google's feed. Not only will you see more helpful content that may not be new to the web but is new and useful to you, you'll see more interested content in the form of videos and other visual content. And because Discover is coming to the mobile Google homepage, you can experience it whenever you open a new page in your web browser rather than having to open the dedicated Google app.
