Apple completes Shazam acquisition, will make app ad-free

It's official: Apple now owns Shazam.

Apple confirmed today that it's completed its acquisition of Shazam. Apple first announced its plans to acquire Shazam in December 2017, and while there's no official word on how much Apple paid for Shazam, rumors have suggested that it was around $400 million.

The big news for end-users here is that Shazam will soon become ad-free for all customers. Shazam has long been available in two versions, a free app with advertising and a $2.99 Shazam Encore without ads, but soon everyone will be able to identify songs using Shazam without running into any advertisements.

Here's what Oliver Schusser, Apple's VP of Apple Music, said about the deal:

"Apple and Shazam have a long history together. Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere. With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music.”

Shazam is well-known for its music ID-ing capabilities, and so this is a big acquisition for Apple. It's unclear what Apple plans to do with Shazam and its technology, especially since Siri already uses Shazam to identify songs, but we're sure that Apple's got something planned for Shazam after allegedly dropping nearly half a billion dollars on it.
