Are you keeping your iPhone XS?

Apple iPhone XS

Sometimes the hype can be too much. A device can be built up before it actually gets announced, and then, fingers crossed, the reviews for that handset will be mostly positive. Add those things together and suddenly you might be considering upgrading when, just a short time before, you were perfectly content sticking with what you already had.

It has been a couple of years since a friend of mine picked up a new phone. For a variety of reasons he's simply opted to stick with the handset he's been using for years, some iPhone version but I'm not sure which one. Probably the 6s. And while he was tempted by the iPhone 8, and especially the iPhone X, he knew he wasn't ready to make the jump.

More than anything else, back then, he wasn't willing to pay the higher cost.

But here we are in 2018 and his iPhone was starting to show its age. So he took the plunge, stayed up until midnight on preorder night, and picked up an iPhone XS. (He would have gone with the iPhone X, but obviously Apple made that not an option.) He got it last Friday and his first text to me from the phone was that it was heavy, which he liked.

But then it started to take a turn, and before long he wasn't too happy with Face ID. To be specific, he wasn't happy with the fact that it was slower than Touch ID. I told him that Face ID is faster now than it was, but that was irrelevant. He was coming from Touch ID which was basically instantaneous and didn't require the swipe up gesture to gain access.

And that's all she wrote on that. He text me yesterday and told me that he returned the phone. He wasn't ready to give up Touch ID and since he doesn't use the camera in his phone all that often (I know, that's crazy to me, too), that upgrade was wasted on him. With all that in mind he didn't feel like he needed to spend the money for a new phone so back it went.

Sometimes the cost just isn't worth it, and considering we're talking about smartphones that cost $1,000 or more, that's definitely understandable. If you don't like the new features, or they don't work quite the way you expect, or you won't take advantage of them, well, there's no real reason to spend the money.

So I know that it's only been a few days, but in light of my friend already returning his iPhone XS I wanted to reach out to all of you and see if you've already decided to take back the new iPhone you picked up, or if anyone you know has decided to return theirs. Let me know!
