There are two high-profile smartphones coming out soon with super slim bezels, one from Essential and one from Apple, but today Sharp surprised us one one of its own.
The Sharp Aquos S2 was revealed today in China. The display is similar to the Essential Phone in that it’s got three sides with extremely thin bezels, a bottom bezel that’s a bit thicker, and a round notch at the top of the screen where the front camera is. The Aquos 2 does a couple of things differently than the Essential Phone, though.
For starters, uses its bottom bezel to house its fingerprint reader. Second, rather than having rounded corners like the Essential Phone, the Sharp Aquos S2 has 45-degree angles for its upper left and right corners. Finally, the Essential Phone has a larger and higher-res display that’s 5.7 inches and 2560x1312, while the Sharp Aquos S2’s screen is a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 2040x1080.
Other features of the Sharp Aquos S2 include 12-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear cameras that can be used for depth of field effects, as well as an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. There’s a standard edition of the Aquos S2 that includes a Snapdragon 630 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, while the higher-end model comes with a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
Rounding out the Aquos S2’s feature list is a microSD card slot, a 3020mAh battery, and Android 7.1.1 Nougat running below Sharp’s custom Smile UX.

Sharp is no stranger to the super slim bezels game, having released the Aquos Crystal a few years ago. While the angled corners on the Aquos S2 look kind of strange, the rest of the device looks pretty good, and I’m sure some folks will be pleased to see Sharp put that larger bottom bezel to use by adding the fingerprint reader there. Unfortunately, there’s no word on a wide release for this Aquos S2, so most of us will have to wait for a different device like the Essential Phone or iPhone 8 to live that slim bezel life.
