Earlier today, as expected, Samsung officially announced its newest phablet, the Galaxy Note 8. My fellow editor, Anna, wrote up a spot-on piece, calling the newest member of the smartphone lineup a tricked-out Galaxy S8+. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that at all, and the S Pen is certainly a worthwhile feature to have, but the similarities between the two devices is impossible to ignore.
And while I could ask a question about the pricing for the Galaxy Note 8, considering its specifications compared to other Samsung devices, and especially other Android-based smartphones, and whether or not paying a premium for a stylus is worth it, I don't have any doubt that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to sell well.
Like hot cakes, even.
We could go over the Galaxy Note 7 talking points, too, which would be easy considering Samsung opened the gate for all of us to do just that at the Galaxy Note 8 event. But I think Samsung has already done quite a bit to regain consumer confidence, especially in a short period of time, which is noteworthy because the company was the butt of a lot of jokes leading into 2017.
But instead of all that, I want to ask a question about a specific part of the Galaxy Note 8. After the device's unveiling, and after comment sections started to fill up, I started to see a few here and there that really caught me off guard. They were saying that the Galaxy Note 8 wasn't for them, and, in some cases, "a failure," because it didn't have a removable battery.
Samsung hasn't included a removable battery in its flagship lineups since the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 5, and it doesn't appear to have any plans on going back to the way things were. And while I know that there are still some companies out there that offer phones with removable batteries, I think it's safe to say that the standard way of thinking for most of them is that a removable battery isn't a worthwhile move anymore.
I can understand the position, on both sides. For a consumer, being able to quickly swap out a battery was pretty great "back in the day," but for me, personally, it's been so long since that's even been an option I don't even think about it anymore. I think it's great companies have embraced quick charging concepts, which can help top off a battery pretty quickly in a pinch -- as long as you can find a way to plug it into the wall or other charging station.
