It’s no secret that HTC has been having a bit of a rough time in the mobile business lately, and while the HTC U11 has gotten praise for being a pretty good flagship, that device alone isn’t restoring HTC to a former glory. Now a new report claims that HTC is exploring options to improve its situation.
HTC is weighing a few different ways to boost its business, say sources speaking to Bloomberg. These include bringing in a strategic investor and selling or spinning off is Vive virtual reality headset business.
Another option being considered is a full sale of HTC, but one source claims that it’s unlikely HTC goes that route because there’s no obvious acquirer for HTC.
HTC used to be one of the biggest names in mobile, crafting popular Windows Mobile smartphones, creating the first consumer Android phone, and more. The company hasn’t been quite as lucky in recent years, though, as competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple has heated up. HTC’s Vive VR headset seems to be doing well for the company, but VR is still in early days and requires a powerful PC, which is a turn off for some people.
For now we’ll just have to wait and see which route HTC takes to keep churning out handsets and headsets.
