BlackBerry may license its custom Android software to other device makers

BlackBerry Priv hands-on video

Security is one of the main focuses of BlackBerry’s custom Android software, with the company touting features like its DTEK security monitoring app. And soon, BlackBerry may make its software available to other device makers.

BlackBerry is in talks with global smartphone makers about licensing its custom Android software, says The Economic Times. It’s unclear exactly which device makers BlackBerry is talking to, though.

With a licensing deal, a company would be able to launch its own hardware that’s powered by BlackBerry Secure, the custom version of Android that includes all of BlackBerry’s security features.

BlackBerry works to push security features and monthly security updates to its Android devices, and some folks may like to see these features available on different hardware other than devices coming from BlackBerry itself. A licensing deal could be good for BlackBerry, too, as it’d bring some extra cash into the company.

Have you tried BlackBerry’s security-centric version of Android?
