One day after Google released new monthly security patches for its Nexus and Pixel phones, the company has kept up with another monthly tradition: releasing new Android distribution numbers.
The August 2017 Android distribution numbers are in, telling us which versions of Android were used to access the Play Store during the 7-day period ending on August 8. Android Nougat (7.0-7.1) grew once again in these latest numbers, going from 11.5 percent last month to 13.5 percent this month.
Android Marshmallow (6.0) grew, too, finishing at 31.8 percent in July and 32.3 percent in August. Usage of all other versions of Android dropped or held steady compared to last month.
Android Lollipop (5.0-5.1) fell from 30.1 percent usage in July to 29.2 percent in August, while Android KitKat (4.4) slipped to 16.0 percent. Android Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3) dropped to 7.6 percent usage in August.
Rounding things out, we’ve got both Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and Android Gingerbread (2.3) remaining at 0.7 percent usage.
It’s good to see Nougat usage continue to rise, and that trend should continue as more devices are released with Android 7.0 or 7.1 in tow. Soon we should see another Android version join this list, though, as Android O is nearing its public release.
