As we learned with last year’s Galaxy Note 7 disaster, smartphones can be dangerous little devices if there’s an issue with the lithium ion battery packed inside of them. And now one user may have run into one such issue with their iPhone.
Brianna Olivas recently posted a video to Twitter (explicit language) that shows her iPhone 7 Plus smoking and melting the case that it’s inside. Olivas says that she took her iPhone to an Apple Genius Bar the day before because it stopped turning on, but the employee told her that everything was fine. The next morning, though, the phone began smoking.
So my IPhone 7 plus blew up this morning was not even using it, literally no explanation for this http://pic.twitter.com/sQ8CJt4Y69

“The next morning I was asleep with my phone charging next to my head, my boyfriend grabbed the phone and put it on the dresser," Olives told Mashable. It was then that the device allegedly started steaming and squealing, and when Olivas’ boyfriend took the phone into the bathroom, smoke purportedly began pouring out of the side of the device.
Following the incident, Olivas says that she turned her phone into Apple, who told her that they’re running tests on the device and expect to know more about it within a week. “We are in touch with the customer and looking into it,” said an Apple spokesperson.
A smoking iPhone that melts the case that it’s in is dangerous and could seriously hurt a person carrying the device, so this is a big deal. Whatever caused this iPhone 7 Plus to begin smoking and melting its case is still a mystery, though, so we’ll have to wait and see if there was a defect with the iPhone or if something is up with the charger or something else entirely.
