ZTE will launch an Android Wear smartwatch with LTE later this year

We haven’t seen a ton of new Android Wear smartwatches lately, but one company has confirmed that it’s cooking up a new Android-based wearable.

ZTE is planning to launch an Android Wear smartwatch later in 2017. ZTE USA CEO Lixin Cheng recently confirmed his company’s plans to CNET, adding that the device will have its own LTE connection and that it’ll work without being paired to a smartphone.

Cheng didn’t spill any other details about ZTE’s upcoming Android Wear smartwatch, but he did say that one US carrier has agreed to sell the device.

ZTE hasn’t yet released an Android Wear smartwatch, with Cheng explaining that there were too many issues, like battery life, that prevented ZTE from getting into the market. Those issues have been ironed out, Cheng said, and so now ZTE is ready to get into the Android Wear game.

While there haven’t been many new Android Wear watches launching lately, that’ll change soon. Not only were new Android-based smartwatches announced at CES 2017, but now we’ve got this ZTE device, and Google has confirmed that it’s cooking up two Android Wear smartwatches of its own. Combine all of that new hardware with the impending Android Wear 2.0 release, and it’s looking like early 2017 will be a great time for fans of Google’s wearables platform.
