Japan regularly gets interesting smartphones that we don’t see in many other countries, if any others, like the HTC J Butterfly, Sony VAIO Phone Biz, and LG Wine Smart. Today another unique phone was announced for Japan.
The Kyocera “rafre” has been officially revealed in Japan. The rafre’s highlight feature is that it can be washed with foaming hand soap and body soap. This means that if your rafre gets dirty, you can clean it just like you’d clean your hands and then be on your way.
In addition to offering resistance to foaming soap, the Kyocera rafre can be used when the touchscreen is wet. So if you get your phone wet, like if you’re out running in the rain, you can continue to use the touchscreen without issue.
The Kyocera rafre also includes a special cooking app that can be operated with hand gestures. While you can wash the screen if it gets dirty, you can avoid having to do that using the cooking app that’ll let you wave your hand above the display to scroll through recipes, set timers, and answer calls.
Another unique feature of the Kyocera rafre is its Smart Sonic Receiver. The rafre doesn’t have a regular earpiece so that water or dirt can’t enter the phone, so it uses Smart Sonic Receiver tech to send vibrations to the eardrum via the phone’s display.
The Kyocera rafre runs Android 7.0 Nougat on a 5-inch HD display. It’s got 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a microSD slot for adding more storage if you need it. The rafre will launch on Japanese carrier KDDI in March 2017.
