Sprint will acquire 33 percent of Jay Z's Tidal streaming music service

Sprint Tidal deal

Sprint is kicking off the week by announcing a major deal with another company.

Sprint has agreed to acquire 33 percent of Tidal, the streaming music service owned by Jay Z. Sprint stresses that Jay Z and the artist-owners will continue to run the service, but Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure does plan to join Tidal’s Board of Directors.

As for what this means for Sprint customers, Sprint says that Tidal and its artists will make content that’ll only be available to Sprint subscribers. No other details have been given, but Sprint and Tidal will announce more info soon.

The battle between streaming music services is pretty fierce, with companies like Spotify, Apple, Google, Pandora, and Tidal all vying to be your source for music. Tidal wants to stand out by offering high-quality music, including HiFi and master quality audio. And while we’ll have to wait and see what Sprint’s deal with Tidal means for customers, for Tidal it means that its name and service will likely be in front of Sprint subscribers a lot more than it was before.
