The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are still fairly new devices, having just launched a few months ago, but rumors about the next models are already starting to surface.
Google is expected to place a major focus on the Pixel 2 camera. Sources tell 9to5Google that Google wants to “master low light photography” with the Pixel 2, and that while Google isn’t planning to cram a ton of megapixels into that camera, it does intend to pack some extra features in there.
Another detail that’s rumored for the Pixel 2 is waterproofing. While this feature is locked in quite yet, it’s said to be “still on the table,” according to the source of today’s report.
Google is reportedly still deciding on which processor to include in its next flagship smartphone. There are said to be models in testing with Snapdragon 83x chips, some with Intel processors, and some with a custom chipset developed by Google. The Pixel 2 is still quite a ways away from release, so it’s not surprising to hear that Google is testing multiple processors to determine which is best for its next big thing.
Finally, it’s said that Google is testing different prototypes of the Pixel 2, including a lower-cost “Pixel 2B.” While the Pixel 2 could be at least $50 pricier than the Pixel (the base model Pixel is priced at $649), the Pixel 2B is expected to be “significantly cheaper” if it does come to market.
There’s no mention in today’s report about when the Pixel 2 might make its official debut, but if Google follows the yearly update cycle that most other manufacturers do, then we should see the new device in October. As for its features, the Pixel has caught some flak for not being waterproof like the iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7, so it’d be surprising if Google didn’t address that with the Pixel 2. And when it comes to the camera, the Pixel is often lauded as having one of the best smartphone cameras on the market, and I’m sure that Google wants to keep that title with the Pixel 2.
Other features are still up in the air, but the Pixel 2 is going to be a flagship device, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if features like a Snapdragon 835, at least 4GB of RAM, USB Type-C, and a fingerprint reader also made the cut. The Pixel 2 may not debut until October, but it’s sure to be one of 2017’s most anticipated devices, so we’ll likely see more leaks and rumors surrounding the phone in the coming months.
