Sony Xperia X receives Android 7.1.1 through Concept program

Sony Xperia X

Sony is kicking off 2017 with an Android 7.1.1 update.

Sony is now pushing Android 7.1.1 to the Xperia X. The catch is that this update is part of Sony’s Concept for Android program, which is the company’s effort to try a new way of developing software that’s focused on speedy updates.

Xperia X devices enrolled in the Concept for Android program are now receiving an update to version 38.3.A.0.41, which includes Android 7.1.1 and the December 1, 2016 security patches. There’s also a Restart button in the power off menu, support for PS4 remote play (but no DualShock support), and a faster camera startup time.

If you’ve got an Xperia X (model F5121), you can try Sony’s Concept for Android program. Simply head to the Play Store, install the Concept Installer app, and register in the app, and then you should receive a software update that’ll include the new Concept for Android software within 24 hours.

To date, the only devices that’ve been updated to Android 7.1.1 are Pixels and Nexuses, so it’s exciting to see the Xperia X receiving a helping of 7.1.1, too. The update is limited to the Concept for Android program, but it does show that Sony can be pretty fast with software updates.
