If you’re an AT&T customer, there are two ways you could get an unlimited data plan: have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, or sign up for DirecTV service and get a new unlimited data plan. Unfortunately for customers with a grandfathered unlimited plan, that option is about to get more expensive.
AT&T has quietly revealed that starting in March 2017, it’ll begin charging $5 more per month for legacy unlimited smartphone data plans. This means that the plan will cost $40 per month.
This is the second time that we’ve seen AT&T increase the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plans. The first was in February of 2016, when AT&T bumped the cost up $5 per month.
If you’ve got a grandfathered unlimited data plan and don’t want to pay $5 more per month for the service, you can cancel service within 60 days of the price increase appearing on your bill and AT&T will waive your early termination fee.
Also worth noting is that unlimited data plan customers are still subject to reduced data speeds after using 22GB of data per month. Once they cross that threshold, AT&T may reduce speeds when customers are in a congested area.
It’s kind of disappointing to see another price increase for AT&T’s grandfathered unlimited data plan, but even with this increase, that plan’s price is less than other grandfathered unlimited plans. And for AT&T customers that’ve been holding on to their unlimited data plans this long, a $5 per month increase doesn’t seem like enough to get many to abandon the plan now.
