HMD Global's newest Nokia-branded Android One smartphone is official.
The Nokia 7.1 features a 5.84-inch Full HD+ display and, like many other smartphones on the market nowadays, there's a notch at the top of the device. HMD Global has included a chin at the bottom of the display with Nokia branding. The display includes PureDisplay tech, which HMD says offers improved contrast anc clarity as well as HDR10 support.
Inside the Nokia 7.1's display notch is an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture for all your selfie needs. The back of the phone is home to a dual camera setup with 12MP and 5MP sensors with ZEISS optics. The main 12MP sensor offers 1.28um pixels, f/1.8 aperture, and Electronic Image Stabilization, while the 5MP sesnor has an f/2.4 aperture.
HMD has included a couple of notable software features to help you take advantage of the Nokia 7.1's cameras. The Pro Camera Mode will give you control over features like white balance, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, and there's also a "bothie" feature that'll let you capture photos and videos with both the front and rear cameras.
The body of the Nokia 7.1 features a 6000 series aluminum CNC machined frame and die cast metal center. Inside that body lives a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card slot. There's a 3060mAh battery, a USB-C port for charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
On the software side, the Nokia 7.1 comes equipped with Android Oreo. Because it's an Android One device, the Nokia 7.1 will get three years of monthly security patches and two years of OS updates. And HMD says that the Nokia 7.1 is "built ready for the Android 9 software update".
The Nokia 7.1 will be available in Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel color options. It'll be available in select markets starting in October at a price of €319 for the 3GB/32GB model and €349 for the 4GB/64GB model. In the U.S. the Nokia 7.1 will be available with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Pre-orders will begin at Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H starting October 5th for $349 and will launch on October 28th.
Also announced today are the Nokia True Wireless Earbuds and Nokia Pro Wireless Earphones. The Nokia True Wireless Earbuds are totally wireless and offer up to 3.5 hours of play time plus a charging case that can hold three charges. Meanwhile, the Nokia Pro Wireless Earphones are connected by a neckband and offer up to 10 hours of playback on a single charge.
At first glance, the Nokia 7.1 looks like it could be a great handset for consumers in the market for an affordable Android phone. It's got an attractive design with premium materials, a respectable feature set for the price, and the Android One software means you're guaranteed to get OS updates and security updates.
What do you think of the Nokia 7.1? Could it be your next phone?
