After being hit by a couple of delays, the RED Hydrogen One is finally ready for launch.
RED's first smartphone will arrive at AT&T and Verizon on November 2nd. AT&T customers can expect to pay $43.17 per month over 30 months for the Hydrogen One, while Verizon will ask $53.95 per month for 24 months. The full retail price of the RED Hydrogen One is $1,295.
Originally announced back in mid-2017, the Hydrogen One is the first smartphone from high-end camera maker RED. One of the phone's main features is its 5.7-inch 2560x1440 holographic display, which can display 4-View (H4V) content. This is like glasses-free 3D, but with two additional views that RED says "adds a more realistic perception of texture and depth".
The cameras on the RED Hydrogen One can capture H4V content, letting you view your photos and videos in this format. The rear camera on the Hydrogen One is a 12.3MP shooter with LED flash, and the front is home to dual 8.3MP cameras.
RED's Hydrogen One is powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor that's paired with 6GB of RAM. The Black and Shadow aluminum versions of the phone come with 128GB of built-in storage, while the Titanium model is equipped with 256GB. All three versions come with a microSD card slot, though, letting you add more storage if you need it. Other features include Android 8.1, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a fingerprint reader, front-facing speakers, and a 4500mAh battery.
One other notable feature of the RED Hydrogen One is its module system. With it, you'll be able to do things like add a power pack to boost your battery life, expand the Hydrogen One's storage, or add a camera module with interchangeable lens mounts. RED says that modules are coming in 2019.
The RED Hydrogen One is an interesting device for a few reasons. Not only is it the first smartphone from RED, a company known for making high-end cameras, but its holographic display makes it one of the first phones with a 3D screen we've seen in a while. The 4500mAh battery is pretty attractive, as well. Considering its price tag, though, you may want to visit an AT&T or Verizon store to see how well the holographic H4V screen performs in-person before dropping $1,295 on a RED Hydrogen One of your very own.
