Right on schedule, LG has introduced its newest flagship device, the LG V40 ThinQ.
One of the main features of the new LG V40 ThinQ is its cameras. There's a total of five cameras on this device, with three on the back and two on the front, and each serves a different purpose. Around back there's a 16MP 107-degree super wide angle lens with f/1.9 aperture, a 12MP standard sensor with f/1.5 aperture, and a 12MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom and f/2.4 aperture.
LG also says that it made some improvements to the main rear camera compared to the LG V30. Not only does this 12MP camera have a 40 percent larger pixel size (1.4um), it's also got an 18 percent larger image sensor. The f/1.5 aperture helps give it greater depth of field, half the shutter lag, and faster burst compared to the V30, too. And the Dual Phase Detection Autofocus helps the V40 ThinQ offer automatic focusing that's 50 percent faster.
Around front, there are two cameras for your selfie needs. The 8MP standard sensor has an f/1.9 aperture and 1.12um pixel size, while the 5MP camera has a 90-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture.
To help you take advantage of all those cameras, LG has bundled several camera-centric software features into the V40 ThinQ. An AI Composition feature will frame, capture, and recommend an alternative shot to the one taken by the user, and Cine Shot will help you create cinemagraphs, which are images with animation. There's also 3D Light Effect to give your photo "professional-looking lighting", AR Emoji, and Custom Backdrop to give your photo a new background.
Audio is another major focus of the V40 ThinQ. LG touts that its new phone has a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC and the same Boombox Speaker feature found on the LG G7 ThinQ, which uses the internal space of the phone as a resonance chamber to double the bass output. There's DTS:X 3D Surround Sound in there, too, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The raw specs of the LG V40 ThinQ include a Snapdragon 845 procerssor, 6GB of RAM, and either 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage. There's a microSD card slot in there, too, if the included storage isn't enough. LG has also bundled a 3300mAh battery into the V40 ThinQ along with wireless charging and a USB-C port. The screen is a 6.4-inch 3120x1440 OLED panel with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a notch. LG says the chin at the bottom of the V40 ThinQ's screen is 1.6mm thinner than the one on the V30.
One other detail highlighted by LG is the V40 ThinQ's body. The company used a "Silky Blast" process to etch microscopic pits into the phone's tempered glass back, which LG says will give the V40 ThinQ a matte finish that won't be slippery. The LG V40 ThinQ also boasts IP68 water resistance and it meets the U.S. Department of Defense requirements for durability.
The LG V40 ThinQ will launch on October 19th with Android 8.1 Oreo in tow, though many U.S. carriers will begin taking pre-orders on October 12th. Here's how the pricing for the U.S. carriers will break down:
- AT&T: $31.67 per month for 30 months on AT&T Next
- Sprint: $20 per month on an 18-month lease after a $20 monthly credit
- T-Mobile: $200 down and $30 per month for 24 months
- Verizon: $40.83 per month for 24 months
- U.S. Cellular: $29.99 per month on a 30-month equipment installment plan
