Instagram is rolling out a couple of new features to make it easier to find friends.
First up is Nametag. This is a customizable identification card that lets people quickly find your Instagram profile when it's scanned. You can share your Nametag in the Instagram app and as well as Facebook, WhatsApp, and through text messages.
To create a Nametag, go to your profile, select the button with the three lines in the upper right corner, and select Nametag. You can then personalize your Nametag by trying other colors and emojis and adding selfies. You can also scan someone else's Nametag at this screen by tapping the "Scan a nametag" button at the bottom of the screen. Alternately, you can swipe right to the camera to scan a Nametag.
The other new feature being tested by Instagram is School Communities. With it, you can easily connect with other students and graduates from your university. Instagram is testing the School Communities feature across a variety of U.S. schools.
If you choose to join the feature, you can add a line to your Instagram profile that lists your university, class year, and relevant groups like major, sports team, and sorority. You and everyone else that's joined the same university can view a directory that lists all the people in the School Community, sorted by year. You can also message people from this list, though messages from anyone you don't already follow will appear in the pending section of your inbox.
Nametag is now available globally in both the Android and iPhone versions of Instagram. School Communities is in testing at select universities and will expand to more schools in the coming weeks.
