Samsung Galaxy Note 9 catches fire while inside a bag

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 hands-on video

The Galaxy Note 7 is a device that'll be known for getting discontinued following multiple reports of devices smoking and catching fire. The Note 8 lived its life in the flagship spotlight without any major scandals like that, but unfortunately for Samsung, a new report claims that a Galaxy Note 9 recently caught fire.

New York City-based real estate agent Diane Chung says that her Galaxy Note 9 caught fire while in her bag. While riding an elevator, Chung says that the phone "became extremely hot" and then emitted "a whistling and screeching sound" and began to spew thick smoke. She says that she burned her fingers as she tried to remove the "extremely hot" phone from her bag.

Eventually the elevator doors opened and Chung says she kicked the Note 9 out. Someone then picked the phone up with a clock and dropped it into a bucket of water.

Chung has described the event as "traumatic" and has filed a lawsuit against Samsung seeking unspecified damages and a block on sales of the Galaxy Note 9. "We have not received any reports of similar incidents involving a Galaxy Note 9 device and we are investigating the matter," said a Samsung spokesperson.

This sounds like a scary situation to be in, especially when you're stuck in an elevator. It's good to hear that Samsung is looking into the situation, and hopefully for the company and all the Note 9 owners out there, this device catching fire was just the result of a manufacturing defect and not some sort of issue that results in more phones burning up.
