OnePlus is a company known for its smartphones, but next year it's going to get into a different product category.
OnePlus is making a smart TV. The OnePlus TV is a smart 4K LED TV that's coming next year, and while most of the device's features are still up in the air, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has dropped a few tidbits of information. OnePlus is working with an OS partner on its TV so that it'll fit into existing ecosystems, Lau told PCMag, which should help in getting updates to the TV.
The OnePlus TV is also expected to connect well to smartphones. "Something that seems as simple as displaying the photos from your mobile phone to a television is still difficult to achieve," Lau explained.
Lau wasn't ready to talk launch timing or pricing. He did say that the OnePlus TV will be a "premium" product, but that OnePlus is willing to cut into its profit margin on the device in exchange for building up its user base.
More details on the OnePlus TV are expected in early 2019. In the meantime, OnePlus plans to field suggestions from its community on what features should be included in the smart TV.
The smart TV business is an interesting market for OnePlus to get into. OnePlus has focused exclusively on smartphones and accessories up until now, gaining a fanbase by offering flagship-tier devices at aggressive pricing. We have seen smartphone makers sell TVs in the past, most notably Xiaomi, so it's possible that OnePlus could succeed at making TVs as well. We look forward to seeing how OnePlus applies its strategies to a smart TV device.
