AT&T names more 5G cities, also expands LTE-LAA coverage

To date, AT&T has named three cities that'll get its mobile 5G service. Today that number double.

AT&T has named three more cities where it will deploy 5G. Charlotte and Raleigh, NC and Oklahoma City, OK will all get AT&T's mobile 5G coverage. They join Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; and Waco, TX as the first cities to get AT&T 5G.

AT&T has said that it plans to begin deploying mobile 5G  in 2018. Of course, that network won't do you much good if you don't have a device to access it, so AT&T will  have a 5G-capable Wi-Fi hotspot available in its 5G markets by the end of this year. AT&T has previously said that it'll begin to launch 5G smartphones in "early 2019 and beyond."

In other AT&T network news, the big blue carrier also said that it's launched LTE License Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) in parts of 8 new markets. They include Austin, Dallas, Houston, Little Rock, San Antonio, San Jose, Tampa, and Tuscaloosa. This brings AT&T's LTE-LAA market count to 15, with the coverage also available in parts of Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, McAllen, San Francisco, and Sacramento.

LTE-LAA is a network technology that utilizes unlicensed 5GHz spectrum and combines it with LTE in the licensed band to create a larger pipe that can get you faster data speeds. You do need a device that supports LTE-LAA to take advantage of this feature. These devices include the Galaxy S8 or S9, Galaxy Note 8, Moto Z2 Force Editoin, and LG V30.

Finally, AT&T says that its 5G Evolution coverage is now live in more than 140 markets and that it'll reach more than 400 markets in 2018. 5G Evolution is a 4G LTE network technology that can offers peak theoretical speeds of 400Mbps on supported devices.
