Samsung says its 'unbreakable display' survived 26 drops

One week after Corning announced Gorilla Glass 6, Samsung has some news to share on its own tough display.

Samsung Display says that its unbreakable smartphone panel has been certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories, an OSHA testing company. In this testing, Samsung's screen was dropped 1.2 meters (almost 4 feet) onto the ground 26 times in a row then dropped from 1.8 meters (almost 6 feet). It was also subjected to high (71 degrees) and low (-32 degrees) temperatures. After all that, the display continued working normally with no damage to its front, sides, or edges.

The flexible OLED panel has an "unbreakable substrate" and an overlay window adhered to it. "The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass," said Samsung Display's Hojung Kim.

In addition to being used for smartphones, Samsung Display says that its unbreakable screen can be used for products like automobile display consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consols, and tablet PCs.

Smartphones are important devices for a lot of people. Not only do they often hold a lot of personal info, but they're often the main way that people stay connected to their loved ones and the world around them, and they're usually pretty expensive, too. Drops happen, though, and so tough displays like Samsung's can come in handy to save people from spending hundreds of dollars to fix a shattered screen.
