MoviePass announces price increase, limit on seeing major new releases

MoviePass official

MoviePass has made a name for itself by letting users see multiple movies a month for a $9.95 subscription fee, but soon that price will increase.

MoviePass today announced that it will increase the price of the standard pricing plan to $14.95 per month. The price hike will occur within the next 30 days, the company says, and is part of an effort to reduce cash burn by 60 percent and generate lower funding needs in the future.

Another major change coming to MoviePass is that first run movies opening on 1,000 screens or more will be limited in their availability during the first two weeks, unless they're made available on a promotional basis.

Finally, MoviePass says that it's prepping "additional tactics" to prevent abuse of its service.

MoviePass has had a bit of a rough go lately, including a recent service outage that prevented some users from seeing movies because the company ran out of money to pay for tickets. This price increase and limitation on the ability to see big movies in their first two weeks could help MoviePass with its financials, but they could also drive some users away.

Have you ever used MoviePass? What do you think of these changes that are coming to the service?
