Earlier this year, before the Galaxy S8 was made official, there were leaks that hinted that Samsung may put the fingerprint reader, which was typically positioned below the display in a physical button, embedded into the display. But they didn't last long, because we eventually saw the back of the phone, too, and right there was an obvious fingerprint reader. But that led to even more questions, specifically: Is that really where it's going to be?
By now we know that is indeed where Samsung put the fingerprint reader, just to the side of the camera and, well, a little out of the way. In other handsets where the fingerprint reader is on the back, it's usually placed closer to the middle of the back plate, which typically makes it easier to reach. But Samsung went a different route, and, as many reviews pointed out, it's one of the only "negative marks" for the flagship smartphone.
But Samsung still hasn't been able to embed the fingerprint sensor in its displays, so the Galaxy Note 8 may be getting the same treatment.
Near the end of this month, Samsung is going to announce the Galaxy Note 8, the newest addition to the phablet lineup and a big return to the family of devices after the fiasco that was the Galaxy Note 7 last year. Samsung has already made a big comeback with the Galaxy S8, so it just has to make a solid device and the company will probably be okay.
I used the Galaxy S8+ for a little while, and I was a genuine fan of the phone. Especially that display. And while I don't dislike fingerprint readers on the back of phones, I wasn't a huge fan of Samsung's placement, either. I didn't mind it at first, but eventually I just stopped wanting to use it.
The Galaxy S8 sold well, and I can't help but think that the Galaxy Note 8 will, too. But ahead of its launch, I have to admit that I'm not too thrilled with the fingerprint reader being where it is, based on the leaks we've seen. It's not a surprise, of course. Samsung may have been able to boost sales of the Galaxy Note 8 if it did get that fingerprint sensor embedded into the display, but it wasn't likely. Rumor has it they'll launch that feature next year, which is definitely believable.
So, here's the question to all of you: Does the fingerprint reader on the Galaxy Note 8 matter at all?
