Upcoming Apple Watch may include LTE connectivity

Apple Watch Series 2 hands-on video

To date, the Apple Watch has supported select features when it’s not connected to an iPhone, like step counting. An upcoming Apple Watch may greatly expand that list of features.

Apple is prepping a new version of the Apple Watch with built-in LTE cellular connectivity, according to Bloomberg. This would enable Apple Watch owners do things like download music and use other apps, even if they don’t have their iPhone nearby.

This cellular-enabled Apple Watch reportedly uses an Intel-made LTE modem. Apple is said to be in talks with U.S. and European carriers about carrying the cellular Apple Watch, but only a select number of carriers that offer the iPhone will also sell this new Apple Watch. That includes AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the U.S.

Apple is aiming to launch its cellular Apple Watch by the end of the year, but today’s report cautions that delays could push the device outside of 2017.

An Apple Watch with a built-in LTE connection could be a big addition to Apple’s lineup of wearables. While the Apple Watch can already perform some actions without a connection to an iPhone, built-in cellular connectivity could greatly expand the Apple Watch’s repertoire, potentially letting owners do things like stream music, send messages, get directions, and more, all while they leave their iPhone at home.
