Sprint Galaxy S8 and S8+ update adds Calling PLUS for Wi-Fi and LTE calls

Sprint Galaxy S8 and S8+ customers, you’ve got a new update coming your way with a new feature in tow.

The Sprint Galaxy S8 and S8+ are now being updated to software version G950USQU1AQGL and G955USQU1AQGL, respectively. The update includes security improvements, new Enhanced Messaging features, stability improvements, bug fixes, performance improvements, and perhaps the most notable new feature, Calling PLUS support.

Calling PLUS is a Sprint feature that combines two voice calling features: Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling. With Wi-Fi Calling, you can send and receive phone calls and text messages over Wi-Fi, giving you improved voice quality and the ability to conduct calls even when your cellular signal is weak.

Meanwhile, LTE Calling allows you to send and receive calls and texts over Sprint’s LTE network. This means that you can use LTE data while you’re on a voice call.

Sprint does note that the LTE Calling feature included with Calling PLUS is not the same as Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Here’s Sprint’s full statement on Calling PLUS and VoLTE:

“No, the current Calling PLUS solution provides VoIP capabilities using the Sprint LTE network. Sprint is on a path toward having an all IP-based network capable of supporting VoLTE. We have not announced a timeframe for commercial deployment of VoLTE. Today we offer HD Voice on a very efficient CDMA1x platform and our voice network is ranked #2 nationwide by independent mobile analytics firm RootMetrics. We will transition customers to VoLTE when we are confident we can match the great voice experience provided today.”

While Calling PLUS isn’t exactly VoLTE, these calling-focused features do sound like solid improvements to the calling and messaging experience on Sprint’s Galaxy S8 and S8+. If you’ve got one of these devices, you should see the software update hit your phone soon if it hasn’t arrived already.
