After leaking out a few times in recent months, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active has finally been made official.
The Galaxy S8 Active will be available for pre-order from AT&T starting tomorrow, August 8th, with a full launch scheduled for August 11th. Pricing will be set at $28.34 per month for 30 months. The Galaxy S8 Active will be exclusive to AT&T “for a limited time.”
AT&T is also running a few deals for folks that buy a Galaxy S8 phone, including the new Galaxy S8 Active. There include a free Galaxy S8 when you add a new line on AT&T Next and add DirecTV, and a Gear S2 smartwatch for $0.99 or a Gear S3 smartwatch for $49.99 with a two-year contract when you buy a Galaxy S8 on AT&T Next.
As you might’ve guessed by looking at the image at the top of this post, the Galaxy S8 Active is a ruggedized version of the standard Galaxy S8. It’s got a metal frame and bumper to help protect against drops, and the back is textured to give you a better grip.
The Galaxy S8 Active offers a 5.8-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display which is similar to the regular Galaxy S8, but the S8 Active screen doesn’t appear to have curved edges like the S8’s display. Other features of the Galaxy S8 Active include a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel rear camera, Bixby support, and a 4000mAh battery that’s 1000mAh larger than the standard Galaxy S8.
This new Galaxy S8 Active looks like another solid entry in Samsung and AT&T’s Galaxy S Active lineup. Its metal frame and bumpers will better withstand drops compared to the Galaxy S8 with its glass front and rear, and some folks might just prefer the ruggedized look of the Galaxy S8 Active over the standard Galaxy S8. Then there’s the S8 Active’s larger battery, which is a nice upgrade.
