New global smartphone manufacturer rankings show Xiaomi re-entering top five

Research firm Strategy Analytics today released its latest global smartphone manufacturer rankings, and there’s been some notable movement on the list.

In Q2 2017, Samsung and Apple held the top one and two spots, respectively, with both companies increasing shipment numbers year-over-year but slipping slightly when it comes to marketshare percentage. Samsung finished the quarter with 22.1 percent of the marketshare, while Apple claimed 11.4 percent.

Huawei enjoyed a boost in both shipments and marketshare, finishing Q2 2017 in third place with 10.7 percent marketshare. Oppo grew the most YoY of any of these five manufacturers, gaining nearly three percent to finish Q2 2017 with a marketshare of 8.2 percent.

Rounding out the top five is Xiaomi, who is re-entering the top five for the first time in a year. Shipments of Xiaomi smartphones grew from Q2 2016 to Q2 2017 and so did the company’s marketshare, finishing at a marketshare of 6.4 percent.

Xiaomi had a bit of an executive shakeup earlier this year, with Global Vice President Hugo Barra announcing his exit after more than three years at the company. The change doesn’t appear to have fazed Xiaomi, though, with the company becoming a top five smartphone maker in the months following Barra’s announcement. Now we wait and see if Xiaomi can continue this momentum and remain a top five smartphone maker.
