Smartphones with FM radio are big in many markets around the world, but they’re not all that common in North America. That’s going to change, though, at least when it comes to LG phones.
LG is partnering with NextRadio to enable FM radio chips in its future smartphones in the U.S., Canada, and Latin American countries. LG will enable the FM radio in its phones in other countries soon.
With an FM radio chip, LG phone owners will be able to listen to live, local radio on their devices. Using an FM radio chip with NextRadio broadcasts consumes 3 times less battery and 20 times less data than streaming.
While streaming music and radio apps can give you more listening options, using the FM radio can help if you’re trying to stretch your phone battery or data allotment. It’s good that LG will enable the FM radio chips on its smartphones and give its customers the option to tune in to local radio if they’d like.
