Sony confirms SmartWatch 3 won't get Android Wear 2.0 update

Sony SmartWatch 3 Steel hands-on

When Google officially announced the launch of Android Wear 2.0, it also confirmed which existing smartwatches would receive the update. The Sony SmartWatch 3 was absent from that list, but if any owners were holding out hope that that would change, it’s not happening.

Sony has confirmed that the SmartWatch 3 will not get an update to Android Wear 2.0. On the SmartWatch 3’s product page, Sony has added a footnote that says “SmartWatch 3 SWR50 supports up to Android Wear 1.5. Android Wear 2.0 and onwards are not supported.”

This news is likely disappointing to anyone rocking a Sony SmartWatch 3 on their wrist, but it’s also not surprising. The SmartWatch 3 is getting pretty long in the tooth, having launched in late 2014, and so it’s just part of the first batch of Android Wear watches that won’t be updated to 2.0.

Sony SmartWatch 3 owners, does this news have you thinking about getting a new wearable?
