Days after MoviePass announced that it would increase its price to $14.95 per month, the company has said that it's walking back that change.
MoviePass announced today that it has listened to its users and decided not to increase its price to $14.95 per month. The service's price will retain its $9.95 per month pricing, but starting August 15th, it will enact some other big changes.
Starting on that date, MoviePass users will be able to see three films per month. Users will get up to a $5.00 discount on any additional movie tickets. "Because only 15 percent of MoviePass members see four or more movies a month, we expect that the new subscription model will have no impact whatsoever on over 85 percent of our subscribers," MoviePass explains.
MoviePass says that its new plan will include "many major studio first-run films." It adds that for subscribers on the new plan, it's suspending Peak Pricing and Ticket Verification.
Monthly subscribers will be able to sign up for the new MoviePass plan when their current plan comes up for renewal starting August 15th. Annual subscribers won't be affected by this change until their renewal dates.
The price increase announced by MoviePass last month likely frustrated a lot of current subscribers, who had been seeing several movies a month for $9.95 for awhile. This new plan brings that popular price back, and while it does impose a limit on how many films users can see each month, that $9.95 price is more important if MoviePass's user stats are accurate.
