Apple ditches Bing for Google for Siri web searches on iOS

iPhone 8 hands-on video

iOS users, there’s a big change to Siri that’s now rolling out.

Apple is changing the default search provider for Siri on iOS and Spotlight on Mac. Previously, these searches would show results from Microsoft’s Bing search, but now they’ll show Google results.

Here’s Apple’s statement to TechCrunch on the change:

“Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari. We have strong relationships with Google and Microsoft and remain committed to delivering the best user experience possible.”

Also of note is that video search results will come from YouTube. Not all searches performed on iOS will use Google results, though, as web image search results from Siri and Spotlight will still come from Bing.

These changes began rolling out at 9:00 am PT this morning and should hit all users by this afternoon.

This is a notable change as it could change the results that you get from your web searches. While there may be some Bing fans upset about this change, more folks use Google search than Bing, so most iOS users should be pleased about the tweak (if they even notice it, that is).
