Hangouts users on Android, we’ve got some bad news for you.
Google is warning G Suite users that it will remove SMS support from Hangouts on May 22. The message that you see above is slated to begin appearing to Hangouts users on March 27, so we should see it start to pop up next week.
In the same email, Google says that Google Voice users won’t be affected, so you Voice folk don’t have anything to worry about for now.
Google has been placing a focus on Android Messages as its texting app of choice while Hangouts recently gained more of an enterprise focus, so it should come as no surprise that Google is removing SMS support from Hangouts. Still, it’s kind of a bummer for anyone that’s been using Hangouts for SMS and Hangouts messages, as they’ll now have to begin using two separate apps when they previously only had to use one.
